JGIA expresses our heartfelt condolences to Ol Pejeta Conservancy for the loss of Earth’s last male Northern White Rhino, Sudan. Sudan’s passing leaves his daughter and granddaughter, Najin and Fatu, the final two of their subspecies.
You may recognise Sudan from iconic photographs of him under 24-hour guard, his profile on popular dating apps designed to raise awareness of genetic diversity in conservation, as the subject of acclaimed Australian artists Gillie and Marc, or from one of the countless news articles circulated worldwide. He and his human carers became symbols of the current state of poaching in Africa and provide a cautionary tale as to why we must commit to overcoming the illicit trade in wildlife.
Dr Goodall reminds us that every individual matters, and Sudan did a great deal in his life to inspire actions to connect people with animals and our shared environment. We are grateful for his time on Planet Earth and for the difference that he made.
