Peace Day Celebrated across Australia and the World

Each year on September 21st we celebrate the International Day of Peace with hundreds of young people in Roots & Shoots groups across Australia and the world. This year we kicked things off in Western Australia where, at the end of term Mercy Mass, St Brigid’s College displayed a peace dove with handwritten messages of peace. Students at John Curtin College made peace doves to cover their library and wrote articles on peace for their school newsletter. At Taronga Zoo, we teamed up with the Youth at the Zoo to fly a peace dove (almost literally in very strong winds!), do a scavenger hunt, “visit Sumatra” on the Tiger Trek and hear from our great friends, the chimp keepers. We will also be hosting events in Melbourne and Queensland in the coming weeks so keep an eye on and Roots & Shoots Australia and our social media channels: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to be a part of the celebrations.

As a UN Messenger of Peace, Dr Jane had her own message of Peace based on the hope that we may someday all live in harmony with our environment and each other. She also spoke to a livestream audience at the United Nations (watch at webtv.un.org). There’s still plenty to come as our global youth are working on creating a video that shows Roots & Shoots members around the world passing a peace dove to each other so we will keep you updated.
