December Newsletter 2014

Merry Christmas!

We hope you had a happy, productive and peaceful  2014.  The JGI Australia team wishes to thank each and every one of you for supporting us through the year. We are grateful to our JGIA members, our hard-working Roots & Shoots members, our Chimp Guardians, our volunteers, our corporate supporters and every one else who enables us to work towards our mission to connect Animals, People and the Environment.

2014 has been a great year for JGI. Some of our highlights include:

  • Jane Goodall’s Australian tour which enabled Jane to reach millions of Australians with her urgent messages to help our planet
  • Hundreds of new Roots & Shoots members
  • Expanded Roots & Shoots into the Northern Territory
  • Recycled approximately 2350 mobile phones
  • Raised funds to support our colleagues in JGI Nepal and JGI South Africa for urgent causes
  • Collaborated with other organisations to support Australian issues such as dingo protection, duck protection, shark protection in Western Australia and the Great Forest National Park.
  • Connected with businesses such as White King to make compassionate decisions.

This would not have been possible without your support.  Best wishes for the new year.

A personal video message from Jane to Australia is here.

A video from the Tchimpounga chimpanzee sanctuary is here.

November Newsletter 2014

1. White King Pulls Chimpanzee Commercial Off Air

JGI is opposed to using Great Apes in advertising and entertainment. Many of you would have seen the recent White King commercial where 3 chimpanzees were used as actors. JGI Australia met with Pental, the company who owns White King, to raise our concerns. By the next day, Pental announced that the commercial will pulled off air on November 22. We are very grateful to Pental for making a decision for the benefit of chimpanzee protection.  We hope Pental’s decision will inspire other companies internationally to stop using Great Apes in advertising. To learn about the issues behind Great Apes in advertising, please click here.

2. Animals in Nepal Need Urgent Help

JGI Australia has joined forces with JGI Nepal to stop the world’s biggest massacre. On 28th November, approximately 500,000 animals are due to be slaughtered near the Gadhimai Temple in Nepal.  The organisers of the Gadhimai Festival have never been under so much pressure to stop the sacrifice, but urgent funds are needed. To donate, please click here. To read more, please click here.

3. Jane’s Video Message

Dr Jane Goodall sent a message to the delegates of the Asia- Pacific Rainforest Summit and the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014, both held in Sydney earlier in November. The World Parks Congress saw more than 5,000 delegates from over 160 countries including heads of state, park rangers, business,  organisation and indigenous leaders, as well as our own JGI team represented by Lilian Pintea from JGI USA, Polly Cevallos and Natalie Houghton from JGI Australia. All were gathered to define the future of protected areas and place them at the centre of solutions to today’s global challenges. Watch Jane’s video message here.

4. Roots & Shoots Expands to the Northern Territory

Arlparra, located 260kms North-East of Alice Springs, is the main community providing services to 16 homelands in the region known as Utopia.  The Arlparra School is the first school in the Northern Territory to join Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program, leading the way for many more.  Utopia Elder and Northern Territory Australian of Year, Rosalie Kunoth-Monks said, “Roots & Shoots reinforces the connection to our land, our plants and our animals.”

5. Jane Goodall and David Attenborough Support the Great Forest National Park

Sydney has the Blue Mountains. Melbourne wants to create the Great Forest National Park, a protected area of forest stretching from Kinglake through to the Baw Baws and north-east up to Eildon.  Jane joined Sir David Attenborough in support of the GFNP.

Over thousands of years, nature has provided the resources that have helped us to survive and flourish. Now, in a time of need, we must help nature to survive. The Great Forest National Park is a project to secure the future of a threatened ecosystem. If we act now, we will be ensuring the forest can continue to provide services that support us- clean water, fresh air and storage of carbon. If we fail now, what future will we have chosen for our grandchildren and their grandchildren?  Please join me in supporting the creation of the Great Forest National Park.” Dr Jane Goodall, DBE

6. Chimp Eden Appeal- Thank you

Chimp Eden Sanctuary in South Africa provides a safe home and long-term care for 34 rescued chimpanzees.  JGI Australia launched an emergency appeal in October to raise funds to build an urgently needed, escape-proof enclosure. October Newsletter 2014

1. The Gadhimai Festival

In 2009, approximately 250,000 farm animals were inhumanely sacrificed during Nepal’s Gadhimai Festival. This horrific event occurs every 5 years, with funding from the government, and will be held again this November. We’re calling on all our friends and members to support the work of our colleagues at the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal. Join the Global Action Movement and raise your voice for the animals of Nepal.  Click here to find out more.

2. Emergency Appeal – Last 2 Days

Chimp Eden Sanctuary in South Africa provides long-term care for 34 rescued chimpanzees. Nikki and Amadeus, victims of the bush meat trade, were rescued in 1996. As a result of unfortunate circumstances, they are endangered for the second time due an incident of aggression. We need an escape-proof enclosure to ensure the safety of Nikki and Amadeus as well as staff of the sanctuary.  If we do not build the required sanctuary, both chimpanzees will face euthanasia.  The global emergency appeal aims to raise $250,000 by the end of the year to build a safe, escape-proof enclosure and upgrade the existing enclosures in the sanctuary. JGI Australia is helping by directing 100% of all online donations (excluding memberships and Chimp Guardian donations) received in October, to Chimp Eden. You can watch Jane Goodall’s video message here and follow the story on their Facebook page.

Please help Nikki and Amadeus by making a tax deductible donation before the end of October here

3. Roots & Shoots Project of the Month

Roots & Shoots members in Victoria helped Sea Shepherd Conservation Society by collecting kitchen provisions for the ships which are soon heading back to the Southern Ocean to patrol for illegal poaching activities. On October 24, Roots & Shoots members were thanked by members of the Sea Shepherd crew with a special tour of the Steve Irwin which is docked in Melbourne.  Thank you to everyone who collected provisions, donated provisions and met at the Steve Irwin to show support.

Resulting from a meeting between Jane Goodall and a handful of dingo protection advocates in June, the inaugural National Day of Action for Dingoes was celebrated across Australia on September 21, calling for a truce on the war against dingoes. During the day, the Australian Dingo Coalition (ADC) was launched, giving dingoes greater hope for a sustainable future.

3. Emergency Appeal for Chimp Eden, South Africa

Chimp Eden Sanctuary provides a safe home and long-term care for 34 rescued chimpanzees. The chimpanzees were rescued from dire conditions, having suffered from the consequences of years of civil war, the bush meat trade, the pet trade or the entertainment industry. Nikki and Amadeus, victims of the bush meat trade, were rescued in 1996. As a result of unfortunate circumstances, they are endangered for the second time due an incident of aggression. Authorities have determined that the two chimpanzees need an escape-proof enclosure to ensure the safety of Nikki and Amadeus as well as staff of the sanctuary.  If we do not build the required sanctuary, both chimpanzees will face euthanasia.  We cannot let this happen. The global emergency appeal aims to raise $250,000 by the end of the year to build a safe, escape-proof enclosure and an upgrade of all the existing enclosures in the Sanctuary. JGI Australia is helping by directing 100% of all online donations (excluding memberships and Chimp Guardian donations) received in October, to Chimp Eden. Please help Nikki and Amadeus by making a tax deductible donation during October here You can watch Jane Goodall’s video message here and follow the story on their Facebook page.

With the support of her parents, Eliza organised to meet with her principal at Ocean Grove Primary School and shared her idea of holding a ‘Wear Your Onesie Day’ to raise money for the Jane Goodall Institute. Eliza encouraged students to bring a gold coin donation and old mobile phones to be recycled. They raised about $450 and collected 75 phones! June Newsletter 2014

1. Jane Goodall’s Australian Tour

Jane Goodall’s Australian Tour- Celebrating her 80th Year- was a great success thanks to our many volunteers, supporters, media, sponsors and dedicated personnel. Jane reached approximately 30 million people through media circulation and events, raising awareness of the Institute to an unprecedented level. Thank you Jane for coming to Australia! We miss you already!

Photos of the tour, kindly taken by Phil Hines Photography, can be seen here.

2. Thank You to Sponsors

Jane’s tour would not have been possible without sponsorship support. Most sponsorship was specific to an event, with the exception of Qantas who was our major tour sponsor. We’d also like to thank our many other sponsors on this page.

3. Return of the Phasmid Book Launch

On June 25, at the Melbourne Zoo, The Return of the Phasmid was launched by JGI CEO, Natalie Houghton (left). The book, written by Rick Wilkinson (right), tells the extraordinary story of a stick insect who, after being decimated by rats on Lord Howe Island, was believed to be extinct for 80 years, only to be rediscovered in a tiny rock crevice in the middle of the sea! Natalie said the book shows us “what good people can do when they’re determined. We need more books like The Return of the Phasmid to raise our spirits and give us hope”. The book, including a foreward by Jane Goodall, is available through this link.

4. Roots & Shoots Spotlight

Recently, a Geelong based R&S group launched the Roots & Shoots Girls Education Project. Their first campaign is in support of JGI’s Peer to Peer Education Program in Uganda. The Peer to Peer Education program is a part of JGI’s community conservation approach and the campaign’s goal is to raise $8000 to support 80 girls throughout their entire high school education. That’s just $100 for a single girl’s whole secondary schooling! You can find out more about this amazing campaign here, and check out their campaign resource if you’re interested in fundraising or getting involved.

5. What’s Happened to Wounda?

Many of you have seen the heartrending video of Wounda, the chimpanzee, being released onto Tchindzoulou Island. The expansion of JGI’s Tchimpounga Rehabilitation Centre to the islands creates much needed space at the current sanctuary site and gives chimpanzees like Wounda more space to thrive in a safe, more natural environment, free from poachers. Wounda is now sharing the island with 11 other chimps and their carers and we hope to relocate another 48. You can help by joining our Chimp Guardian program here.
